the gym leader furrification project is complete! i've made a fursona for every gym leader in pokemon scarlet/violet! ^___^

thoughts about kofu

maybe i'm not looking in the right places but i just want it to be known that i feel that kofu is quite deliberately written to be of chinese descent (whatever that equivalent is in pokemon) because of his name.

like yeah kofu matches the plant naming theme that pokemon loves as the resident seaweed man and i don't dispute that

but i think it also needs to be mentioned that his japanese name is the literal mandarin reading for the chinese characters (you can even see it in his chinese names), instead of just using the japanese reading like with (spitballing here), say katy (kaede). also directly sourced from chinese instead of japanese kanji (that set of characters won't get you anything in japanese)

the portmanteau of kombu and fuco to make kofu makes it a very convenient way to form the chinese word 口福 (koufu) which refers to being able to enjoy good food, or the fortune of enjoying good food

am i overthinking this? maybe. maybe the lack of a u makes my point moot and i'm just stretching it, but a lot of why i like kofu is because apart from being such a jolly old dude who love cooking up a storm for his place, this clever little punnery that hints at his background without being overt is something i appreciate too
